Talal Hasan

Talal Hasan is the founder of 44.01, a pioneering carbon mineralisation company that is fighting climate change by turning CO2 into rock. After studying at Malvern College, Hasan initially pursued a more business focused route, gaining his BA in French & Business Management from Queen Mary University of London and then qualifying as a corporate lawyer through The University of Law. Hasan worked in law for over ten years, based in Oman, before materialising his environmental focus in 2020 when he co-founded WAKUD, Oman’s first biofuel producer. Later the same year Hasan founded his own company, 44.01, which fights climate change by providing safe and affordable CO2 mineralisation technology. At 44.01 they eliminate carbon dioxide by turning it into rock; this is done by speeding up the natural mineralisation process of an ultra-mafic rock called peridotite. This is carried out deep in the subsurface where the rates of mineralisation can be controlled, measured and the rate can be quantified. In 2022 44.01 won the Earthshot Prize which recognises game changing environmental innovations. This prize was launched in 2020 by Prince William and awards five of the most innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges each year with £1 million to scale their work. 44.01 also won an Elon Musk Institute XPrize in 2022 and has now expanded its operations further across Oman and into the UAE, as well as making it into the portfolio of Breakthrough Energy, a venture founded by Bill Gates. Hasan’s mission is to eliminate 1 million tons of CO2 by 2030.
