Clive Staples Lewis, known by most as C.S. Lewis, attended Malvern College on an academic scholarship between 1913-14 and was in School House. Lewis was born in Belfast and was sent to Malvern following his elder brother, Warren, who joined the College in 1909. Despite experiencing intense homesickness for his beloved Northern Ireland whilst at Malvern, Lewis developed his love of Classics and of English Literature thanks to his teacher Harry W. Smith. Lewis gained a triple first from University College, Oxford, and subsequently worked at the university where he tutored George Sayer, who later became a close friend of the author and subsequently Head of English at Malvern College. Lewis maintained his connection with the English department at the College, regularly visiting and collaborating with Sayer. Lewis wrote over 30 books but is best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, which were partly inspired by his time at Malvern, namely the iconic Lamppost.
