William Mercer

Dedicated to fostering curiosity and shaping a thriving school community, William Mercer has been a part of Malvern College Tokyo from day one. Currently a Prep 4 class teacher, he will take on the role of PYP Coordinator and Assistant Headteacher from August 2025, supporting the continued growth of the Preparatory School and the Primary Years Programme. His teaching journey began in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher in Gunma and Osaka before he returned to the UK to train as a primary school teacher. After a decade of teaching, he and his wife embraced the opportunity to be part of Malvern College Tokyo’s founding team.

For Will, curiosity is the Malvern Quality that resonates most. He believes that once a child’s curiosity is sparked, the learning that follows is transformative – an idea that lies at the heart of the IB philosophy. A key initiative he has led is the development of Malvern Manners, a code of conduct that has helped shape positive behaviour during playtimes and lunch, thus strengthening the school’s sense of community. With Malvern College Tokyo continuing to grow, he is excited to see what fresh ideas new staff and pupils will bring, ensuring the school remains a dynamic and innovative place for learning.
